Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential recordingWhile Sam Cooke certainly made beautiful music in the pop realm, his greatest sides were those made with the Soul Stirrers. When Cooke joined the group in 1950 at the age of 19, he'd already spent 4 years singing with the Highway Q.C.'s. The Soul Stirrers lead singer, R.H. Harris, who quit just before Cooke's arrival, had spent almost 25 years molding the group into gospel stardom through an innovative use of two lead singers matched with utmost energy and sophistication. Cooke initially sang in a style similar to Harris's, but soon took off into his own unearthly realm, writing spine-tingling songs like 'Nearer to Thee,' 'Mean Old World,' and the brilliant 'Touch the Hem of His Garment,' then singing them in his soaring, inimitable style with perfect control of phrasing and enunciation. This is an awesome collection, a record to listen to many, many times--to grow old with. Save it for those days when you need absolute proof that true grace does exist. --Mike McGonigal

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sam Cooke at His Best
It is hard to believe that this music is over 50 years old. It sounds as if had been recorded yesterday. Each song is splendid. For those who only know Cooke's non-gospel recordings, check this out. Believe me, these are even better than his pop, rock and soul recordings. In fact, they are much better. These songs go right down to the marrow.I've never heard a better gospel singer. My favorites are "Nearer To Thee," and "Touch The Hem of His Garmet," which the multi-talented Cooke wrote. His voice was from heaven. It will touch your soul.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Swept me away and took me to Church
Excellent CD! This music was before so many singers that I admire, but Sam Cooke's sound is timeless. Yes, it is at the start of his career, which is a great time to hear his gospel music. His roots are in gospel music and he excels on this cd.
The music is so moving that at times when I hear Sam's voice I am moved to tears. The style in which the Soul-Stirrers accompany him was their style back then. These songs are less than 3 minutes long and the Soul-Stirrers were known for their restraint, yet these men could articulate a story and genuinely sing. All of them have talent! We're just blessed that Sam Cooke was their front-man.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This is Sam at his best
When I switched from cassette tapes to CDs several years back this was the first CD that I bought to play in my new CD player. My favorite songs are It Won't Be Very Long, Were You There?, and Lord Remember Me. This is Sam Cooke at his very best. It is so sad that such a talented, gifted life was cut short so soon. But, thank God he left a treasury of good music. I love all of Sam Cooke's music.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - CLASSIC! CLASSIC! CLASSIC!
If you need Gospel Music, this is the only gospel cd that you'll ever need..

Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers is the Greatest Gospel group of ALL-TIME!

Go to your local music store and buy this cd..once you buy it..you wouldn't have to buy another gospel cd ever again because this is the Greatest cd of ALL-TIME!

You've even had people that came after them re-create some of their songs because they were absolutely awesome. I am a black, 22 year old man and I'm telling you...when I'm not listening to Tupac or the Geto Boys...I'm listening to this cd. This cd has not left my radio since I bought it..trust me...this is a 10 star Classic cd...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - There will never be another........
It's sad that not many people my age know anything about Sam Cooke. People are sorely misled on who they believe can sing today. I mean for goodness sake people have even said that Usher is one of the greatest singers of all time(lol). To compare any other singer...even a great singer of today to Sam Cooke is just plain shameful. Can you hear the emence power and control in this man's voice? Jackie Wilson had a great and powerful voice, Aretha Franklin has a dynamic and stirring voice, but those two(two of the three greatest singers of all time)fall unbelievably short of Sam Cooke. Turn this album up loud and you'll understand what I mean. Also, get his "Live at the Harlem Square Club" album and everyone else, as Charles Barkley put it, will just seem "uncivilized".

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai judges ordered Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat's ruling People Power Party (PPP) disbanded on Tuesday after it was found guilty of vote fraud, but party members vowed to "move on" and form another government.

Ted Shelton: "Frankly I felt that BlogOn was a waste of time and money."

I think the BlogOn conference was overproduced. In the name of professionalism the organizing firm turned off potential speakers, oversubscribed sponsors, etc.

I would have liked a debatable topic (aside from *blogging = journalism*. Two people slugging it out. Or a devil's advocate taking challenges from the floor.

I would have liked more hard numbers. Facts. Charts. Diagrams. We have the analytic tools to BS-check them; harder on vague opinions and single-points-of-observation.

I found it disturbing how much money was being commanded (from both attendees and sponsors) for a conference at a university. Maybe it was because it was at Berkeley? Maybe we should have taken over a community college or a Cal State or a DeVry. The facilities costs would have been cheaper at least. I heard an organizer apologize and say the next one would be at a hotel, like that would have been better.

Cost wasn't the whole problem. We're at a stage where early adopters are meeting folks who want to leap the chasm. Huge gaps in knowledge, experience, context, culture, vocabulary. It's the gap.

There are huge ideas to be explored, even in the world of applying blogs to media strategy and the enterprise. And most of the big ideas weren't even on the agenda at BlogOn. Probably because it was catering to those who want to commercialize, fund, and otherwise exploit (excuse me, "get in on") the emerging medium.

Let's fork these conferences so advanced topics on business and technology and culture fit the participants.
