Editorial Review:

Album DescriptionAMPARO: Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin with special guest stars; Joshua Bell, Chris Botti, Renee Fleming and James Taylor. Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin are two legendary musicians primarily known for their work in jazz but also known by a broader musical community in classical crossover, film scores, instrumental and adult music. Recognized both as composers and players, they are artists with strong name recognition. AMPARO has them together again after eight years for a sequel to their Two Worlds album. Like Two Worlds; AMPARO brings music from different areas together. In AMPARO's case music from South America, classical, vocal and jazz. Ultimately, it continues to celebrate their love of music in all its forms. A romantic and rhythmic mix of timeless melodies from Classical and South American music.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not what I expected.
I was hoping for more of a variety of sounds. While the music is nice, it seems to be the same throughout.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Elegant Musical Blend of Jazz with Classical and Latin Thrown In
What a pleasant, enjoyable surprise! Such noted Jazz musicians like Dave Grusin, Chris Botti, and Lee Rittenour, are accompanied by legendary folk rocker James Taylor and classical music superstars like soprano Renee Fleming and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell. For someone interested in sophisticated mood music, then this CD is absolutely a delight, with musical influences encompassing not only jazz, but also Baroque classical and slight Latin musical influences too.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very Enjoyable Music
I'm mainly a "New Age" music type and had some concern that I might have difficulty appreciating this CD. My fears were misguided. I really enjoy listening to this combination of music, and I do mean LISTENING. It's more than background music. I find myself easily staying focused and listening to it. I have found that it makes my commute to work much more palatable. Much of it is fun and lively. I think it will have quite universal appeal, even for the new age types. I highly recommend it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An excellent, creative project from Smooth Jazz & Musical Giants!
AMPARO is a collaborative project that includes smooth jazz legends Dave Grusin, Chris Botti, Lee Rittenour as well as folk-rock great James Taylor, and violin prodigy Joshua Bell. The musical styles represented here are an ecclectic variety ranging from jazz to classical with hints of latin influences as well.

This is a very relaxing CD good for moments of quiet reflection and inspiration. If you are open to musical textures and styles that are a bit different from the previous work of these fine artists, you will enjoy it. Highly recommended!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Charmless, but Harmless
"Amparo" is elevator music with up-market pretensions. Pieces by Albinoni, Faure, Handel, Ravel, and Vaughan Williams, among others, have been arranged by Dave Grusin in a way that reduces them to an aural mush that blends with originals by Lee Ritenour and Grusin himself. The result calls to mind the term "air pudding" Gary Trudeau used in a "Doonesbury" strip about some harmless, undistinguished music. These classical composers have survived worse treatment and won't be scathed by their abuse in this release, which I give one star because I can't give none.

Appearances by classical performers Joshua Bell and Renee Fleming are also meant to give the disc cachet. Their names, in fact, got me to listen to it. They are two of the most gifted musicians now performing, but "Amparo" wastes their gifts. Nothing is awful enough to hurt their reputations, but they won't be enhanced either.

Hearing "Amparo" won't harm you, but my advice is to get some real music. If you don't already know them, start by getting the originals of the pieces by the classical composers, or some violin music played by Bell, or some opera sung by Fleming.

Hurricanes, as we've seen, can wreak serious havoc when they strike populated areas. We've never had control over them before, but one researcher thinks they could be broken up with F-4 fighter jets.

In theory, sending in a pair of the jets to do loops around the eye of the hurricane while it's still out over the ocean, creating sonic booms, would break it up before it hits the shore.

Jet fighters flying at supersonic speeds along special trajectories with a hurricane/typhoon at various altitudes would create supersonic booms. In one such embodiment, the trajectories for the supersonic booms of the present invention are counter to the rotational component of the hurricane and/or typhoon being targeted. As such, supersonic booms can be tailored and/or designed to partially and/or fully -negate the basic rotational contribution in a hurricane by slowing down a hurricane's/typhoon's rotation. Additionally, when supersonic booms propagate downward to the surface of the ocean they also destabilize a hurricane's/typhoon's structure by increasing the pressure in the central part of a hurricane's/typhoon's eye.

It's a pretty crazy idea, but I guess it makes sense. It would be pretty amazing to be able to stop any hurricane before it hit shore, saving millions and millions of dollars and who knows how many lives. I can't wait for them to test this out. [Patent via AV Web; Thanks, Jason!]

Nick Bradbury just had a tumor removed from his head. Glad to hear he's doing well:

The fact that I'm able to type this blog entry less than a week after the operation has me hopeful that recovery will be quicker than I was led to believe, but it will still be a few weeks before I'm able to really tackle any serious work.
